How we aim to keep our sailing sustainable

In a world of ‘over-tourism’ and crowds leaving a trail of destruction behind them, the team at Fraser Island Boat Charters are extremely passionate about ensuring that our business does not add to the ongoing toll of the environment surrounding us.

Whilst we are always looking for ways to improve the steps we put in place at a business level to reduce our carbon emissions and create sustainable travel experiences, here are some of the practices we currently have in place (and how you can help us out while on charter):

Using alternative energy sources

All of the vessels currently in our fleet at Fraser Island Boat Charters utilise solar power as an alternative source of energy. This allows you to keep the batteries charged on board without the need to use engines as often. In addition to solar power, a number of our vessels also feature wind generators on board.

Embracing slow travel

You won’t find any hustle and bustle around these parts. Treating yourself to a bareboat sailing holiday around K’gari [Fraser Island] means you can slowly get to know this incredible part of Queensland while setting your own itinerary. This mode of travel allows you to go where the crowds aren’t and avoid adding to the growing problem of ‘over-tourism’.

Get those sails up!

With a fleet of all sailing catamarans, the easiest way for guests to reduce their footprint on our magical waterways is to go with the wind and get those sails up. Nothing beats the moment when you can turn off the engines and just glide through the wind. You’ll also have peace of mind knowing you are helping to preserve our oceans.

Be mindful with your rubbish

The team at Fraser Island Boat Charters encourages all those who charter on board our vessels to ensure you are correctly storing any rubbish while on the water to avoid any blowing into our oceans. Skip bins are available back at the marina once you return and don’t forget to grab the net on board to pick up any rubbish you see floating about across the Great Sandy Strait.

Offset your emissions with Green Fleet

In a new initiative for 2022, we have partnered with Australian company Green Fleet to allow charterers to offset their travel with us. By opting to offset through your booking process with Fraser Island Boat Charters, Green Fleet will plant enough native trees to replace carbon emissions used throughout your charter.
